Cypress Dino [UPDATED: Delano Dino Baby] | Free Cult Amigurumi Pattern

 

I made this little sweet thing for my youngest baby's birthday present. I hope you enjoy making this as much as I did. I named him Cypress [UPDATED: Delano Dino Baby], after the shade name of the yarn I used for this dinosaur amigurumi. The 'heart spots' on the head are optional; I made this with my son's 3rd birthday in mind, hence the 3 hearts.

Amigurumi really is such an underrated skill.

Materials 

• 2mm silver Boye crochet hook
• Stylecraft Special DK [black, white, cypress, denim]
• Yarn needle
• Scissors
• Stuffing [Poly-fil brand comes with a stuffing stick, this is very helpful]

Terms to know

• MC magic circle/ CH2, 6 SC in CH1.
• CH chain
• SC single crochet
• INC increase
• DEC invisible decrease
• HDC half double crochet
• *PUFF half double crochet puff stitch
• SL ST slip stitch
• FO fasten off 

*Special stitches

• PUFF- Yarn over like you would a HDC, but pull through only 2 loops on the hook, yarn over and pull through 2 loops, repeat until 5 loops are on the hook, yarn over, and pull through all the loops on the hook. *used in making the thumbs. Click here for a tutorial.
• SC together- pinch two sides of a piece together, insert your hook through neighboring stitches, pull up a loop and complete the SC. *used in arms and ears.

Outer ear

• Use cypress, leave a short tail, CH6, 4SC, 3SC in CH1, rotate, 4SC, CH1, turn

• Layer the inner ear in front of the outer ear, *SC together as follows: 4SC, (SC, INC)3X, 4SC, CH1
• *Pinch the flat end of the ear from corner to corner, and SC together. [~2-3SC] FO, leave a long tail.  

Eyes

• This shape is a half moon, with each row acting like the stripes in a rainbow. 
• Start with black, leave a short tail, CH4, 2SC, 3SC in CH1, rotate, 2SC [7]
• CC to denim- CH1, 2SC, INC 3X, 2SC [10]
• CC to white- CH1, 2SC, (SC, INC) 3X, 2SC, SC in the last stitch [13]
• Tuck the yarn ends in the back of the eye, SC along the flat bottom of the eye (SC in between each color) [~16-18SC around]

Assembly

Sew on the snout. Stuff it firmly before closing it.

Sew on the thighs, stuff them firmly before closing.

Sew on the feet to the bottom of the body.

Sew on the arms against the neck. 

Sew on the tail. Stuff it firmly before closing it. 

Sew on the ears. I measured them a finger away from the eyes on either side. 

Sew on the ‘heart spots.’ I chose to sew them on the head. You can sew them on the back of the head, or the rump.
